More Items of Interest about C. R. Schiefer

On either side of the Schiefer garage C. R. has placed carved limestone relief panels of scenes of his adventures as a boy.  He has titled the piece C.R.'s Happy Childhood.  C. R. received his diploma from high school when he signed up to serve in WW II.  After the war he earned his Masters in speech pathology and taught linguistics at Western Illinois University.  Although C. R. was a speech pathologist for many years, the artist was just below the surface.  He did some metal sculpting in the 60's.  After buying a house near Martinsville in 1970, C. R. noticed piles of limestone by the side of the road while traveling to Bloomington, IN.  He sent away for a set of chisels and began chipping away at the stone.  It was a slow and tedious process until a friend showed him an air hammer.  C. R. took to sculpting with the same enthusiasm he shows for life.  He says, "I lead a full life and I enjoy life."

C. R. is creating a truly unique fence.  He calls it the people fence.  At the time of this writing, there were 33 figures in the ever growing row.  There are people dancing, people doing acrobatics, totems, some facing the road and some looking away.  He adds to this fence when the urge strikes.  The people fence shares the property with gargoyles, a 26 foot long Loch Ness Monster, a 24 foot square chess set with pieces that are nearly life size, as well as sculptures of turtles, owls, seals and fish.

During the 70's, 80's, and 90's C. R. displayed his work at art fairs in Miami, Chicago, and New York City as well as locally at Penrod and Talbott Street.  His sculptures have been purchased by people all over the world.  C. R. has also created large pieces for public display.  One of his works is at 65th Street along the Monon Trail and a 9 ft tall rhinoceros is at the Harmony School.   C. R. had sculptures on display at the  Indianapolis Zoo when it was located on 30th Street.  These included a 6 foot stone turtle and  a 4 foot by 9 foot panel of North American water birds.
