Chris was trained as a painter,
graduated with a degree in illustration and began making puppets about
six years later. He feels that the use of three dimensional
figures and scenery gives a depth to his illustrations that cannot be
achieved in other ways. Chris says, "if you experiment and push
yourself, your style will evolve." He enjoys speaking to high
school students about possible careers in art, from a working artists'
point of view. While living in Cincinnatti, Chris was involved in
Happen, Inc., a not for profit program using art to enrich the lives of
children. Red Nose Studio illustration |

Chris grew up on a dairy farm and
learned to make due with what was at hand. He admired his father
and grandfather for being able to fix nearly anything. Chris said,
"On a farm, you could lose a days work if you had to run into town to
have something repaired." Chris attributes his use of "found
objects" to this upbringing. His sets and puppets are a
combination wire, fabric, cardboard, wood miniatures and anything within
arms reach. Chris once constructed an old-fashioned canister
vacuum cleaner from a number of materials including a garlic press, a
tire gauge, and a cord from an old electric skillet. Chris observing his maternal grandfather |
